Moving CCTV, Alarms and Door Entry Onto Your Business Network

Security systems are migrating from analogue lines to IP. Plan the bandwidth, storage and resilience before the switch is forced on you.

Bandwidth and storage add up quickly

Each HD camera streaming continuously consumes meaningful upload bandwidth if recording off site. Local recording with scheduled off-site backup usually gives better reliability and lower cost than pure cloud storage.

Alarm signalling needs a resilient path

Insurers frequently require a monitored, dual-path signalling route. When the analogue line goes, that path must be replaced by IP with a mobile backup — check your policy wording before changing anything.

Keep security devices off the guest network

Cameras and access controllers should sit on their own VLAN with strong credentials and current firmware. Default passwords on internet-facing cameras remain one of the most common breaches at small business premises.
