Adding Online Payments to a Small Business Website

Hosted checkouts, payment links and full integrations — how to start taking card payments online without a developer.

Start with a hosted checkout

A hosted checkout keeps card data entirely off your site, which dramatically reduces your PCI scope and your risk. For most small businesses it is the correct starting point regardless of long-term plans.

Understand the total cost

Online rates are higher than card-present because fraud risk is higher. Factor in the gateway fee, the per-transaction charge and any refund fee when comparing providers.

Strong Customer Authentication

SCA is mandatory for most UK online card payments. Any modern gateway handles it, but check that your checkout does not add friction for repeat customers — exemptions exist for low-value and low-risk transactions.
