Single and cumulative limits
The single-transaction contactless limit in the UK is £100. A cumulative limit also applies, which is why customers are periodically asked for a PIN even on small purchases — this is a card issuer control, not a fault with your terminal.
Mobile wallets are different
Apple Pay and Google Pay authenticate on the device, so many issuers allow transactions above £100. Ensuring your terminal firmware supports high-value contactless can noticeably speed up service in higher-ticket retail.
Operational impact
Faster payment means shorter queues and higher throughput at peak. For hospitality, seconds saved per transaction at a lunchtime rush add up to real covers served.
