Why Business Energy Suppliers Credit Check You — and What to Do If You Fail

Energy is supplied on credit. Here is how suppliers assess risk, and the routes available to new or lower-rated businesses.

Energy is billed in arrears

You consume first and pay later, which makes every contract a credit decision. Suppliers assess company age, filed accounts, county court judgments and payment history with other utilities.

Options if the check is declined

A refusal is rarely the end of the conversation. Options include a security deposit, a director's guarantee, monthly direct debit instead of variable payments, or a supplier that specialises in higher-risk profiles at a modest premium.

Improve the profile over time

File accounts on time, keep direct debits running cleanly for twelve months and settle disputes rather than withholding payment. A clean utility payment record is one of the fastest ways to move into better pricing tiers.
